Is This Reishi Mushroom?, episode #392

Today we came across this huge mushroom and I am convinced it is a reishi mushroom. Can anyone verify this?

Hi Angela & Matt,

Daniel Vitalis just posted some great videos on youtube a couple weeks ago showing red belted polypores growing on some trees, it's about 8 minutes into the 1st part of Stalking the Wild Chaga Mushroom with Daniel Vitalis, they look somewhat similar to yours. He might be the person to ask.

I would label the seeds you're planting so you know what's what once they sprout! You can cut slivers from plastic bottles and use a sharpie on them, they make great labels.

Are you tied into the grid or where does your electricity come from? Do you have plans to set up solar or wind?

Things are lookin' good on the Monarch homestead!

The shroom on the tree does look like a Ganoderma spp. not sure if it is reishi, the wood ear is definitely an Auricula spp. of the wood ear genus. It is true that very few of the fungi that grow off wood are poisonous, most are medicinal, there are a few that are poisonous or cause gastric upset. My approach is to find a locaal mycology professor and get them to visit if possible, and use multiple guides. My background is ethnomycology, and I have a healthy respect for the difficulty of identification, just be careful and work with experts. The beds look like a beautiful keyhole permaculture design, great work! WSould love to just throw in the towel for it all up here and move down there! Do you both have/want a permaculture designer? I am open for whatever the divine calls...

The fastest way to get some plants going is to sprout your seeds and then through then in a sixinch hole... Done... Be sure to interplant EVERYTHING! so that the insects are confused...

Fruit Tree Seed are Notorious as to the length of time it takes for them to sprout... You Should ALWAYS Pre-sprout them in water and in many cases Fruit seed Need to be Chilled First... Then You need to Take a file and rough them up a bit before sprouting them in water...
Then after they sprouted you can put them in a pot and Mulch Them Then Wait!
In any case it is a Long wait for trees from seed...

Good ideas from Andy. I was once MILDLY ill from mushrooms....would be a real waste of time in Vilcabamba! I wonder if Chaga is a Northern species like in Canada.
Enjoying the learning process on the land...
